The history of roulette and why it has always been a favorite of gamblers worldwide

By: Ashoke Banerjee, Thu Oct 29th, 2009

Whenever I go to Las Vegas to gamble I always have to stop on by the roulette wheel to give my luck a try. What separates roulette from all the other gambling games (except for sports betting) because of the fact that you can win so much money with such a small bet. No wonder why there is always such a large crowd around games such as roulette and the crap tables. Ever wonder what the word roulette means? I asked around at a casino in Las Vegas and a fellow gambler told me that it is french for "little wheel". Its origins started in the late 18th century which came from a french novel called La Roulette by Jacques Lablee. In 1843 Germany also started introducing roullete into its country in the casino town of Homburg so by this time the game started to really catch fire all around europe. It was only a matter of time before it started to spread into the new world starting with America. By the late 1800's it was spread all over the united states and everyone wanted to play roulette, The only difference between the European style and the American style is that in American roulette they have adopted 2 zero's on the wheel while in the original European form there is only one zero. This makes the American form a little harder to win in because the odds decrease with the extra zero. These days casinos all over the world now offer both styles of play. People will always play at the roulette wheel simply because you have a chance to win big money even though the odds are lower then blackjack or poker. It is a pure gamblers game so if you have money to spare then this is the game you should be playing. In closing, roulette had its humble beginnings early on in France and within 50 years had spread all throughout Europe. Once it had gained a secure foothold in any particular country the excitment of playing the wheel was so strong that it quickly became a favorite among high risk gamblers. Human beings on the most part have an inbred compulsion to gamble so this is the main reason that so many people get hooked on this game.
